Pochettino is one of the best and most skilled coaches in the World Cup
Pochettino, the U.S. coach, is one of the best and most skilled coaches in the World Cup!
The U.S. national team defeated Australia 2–0 today, officially advancing to the Round of 32 as group leaders with 6 points!
Pochettino came up with some truly impressive tactical ideas today. He knew he’d be facing Australia, who play with five defenders, so he deployed two forwards, each positioned between two defenders to pin down four defenders and force the fullback to come out alone to face the U.S. fullback on the line!
This opened up a large space behind the line, where the central midfielder moved in from the left, and attacking midfielder McKennie from the right.
What was impressive here was that McKennie would sometimes drift to the left to create a numerical advantage in the ball-carrying zone, freeing himself or the midfielder to attack the space without being pressured by an Australian midfielder—a brilliant tactical move!
This is the first time the U.S. has won two consecutive World Cup matches in 96 years and the first time they’ve topped their group since 2010.
Pochettino has built a team that the entire American nation can be proud of.

One of the most wonderful feelings in life is when you choose what you love, and life proves that it was the right choice. The player right in front of you experienced that feeling today!
That player is “Alexander Freeman,” a 21-year-old defender for the U.S. national team who scored his first goal today in his first World Cup appearance against Australia!
What’s even more beautiful about Alexander’s story is that he’s the son of American soccer legend “Antonio Freeman,” who had been pressuring his son to follow in his footsteps in the sport.
But Alexander said at the time that he loved soccer deeply and decided to go against the grain!
And indeed, Alexander did what he loved.
Imagine that during the 2022 World Cup, Alexander was still playing for Orlando City’s reserve team, but by 2025, he had become the best young player in Major League Soccer, had transferred to Villarreal six months earlier, and had been called up to the U.S. World Cup squad.
His father admitted at that moment that seeing his son represent the U.S. at the World Cup was a feeling that surpassed even winning the Super Bowl!
