Bao Kubarsi, Best Young Player at the World Cup
No soccer player is happier today than “Pau Kubarsi.”
The photo above was taken exactly three years ago, when Kubarsi was just 16 years old and was representing the Spanish national team for the first time at the UEFA European Under-17 Championship. Unfortunately, Spain lost the final to France back then!
What happened next was that Barcelona coach Xavi decided to promote Kubarsi to the first team a year later, saying at the time that Kubarsi would usher in a new era for world soccer—and, as usual, many people scoffed at that statement!
Today, Kubarsi is 19 years old and has played in his first World Cup. He outshone every other forward in the tournament to such an extent that he made 21 key passes through the defensive lines against Argentina, recorded six ball recoveries—more than any other player in the final—and won the award for Best Young Player of the World Cup!
From the small village of Estanil, which doesn’t even have a soccer field, to the Best Young Player of the World Cup—the first Spanish player in history to achieve this.
