You are the greatest in history

There’s been a trend circulating for a week now claiming that Di María is Argentina’s number one player, and that whenever he missed certain finals, Argentina lost—in a clear attempt to downplay Messi!

If we’re talking only about finals, let me tell you that Di María didn’t score in the 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals, and Argentina lost them just fine. In the 2021 Copa América final, Di María did score, whereas Messi was the tournament’s top goal contributor with 9 goals, and he was the one who led Argentina to the final!

In the 2022 World Cup final, Di María scored, and Messi scored two goals and was the tournament’s top goal contributor with 10 goals.

In the Finalissima final, Di María scored, while Messi set up two goals and was named Man of the Match. In the 2024 Copa América final, neither of them scored, and finally, Messi didn’t score in the 2026 World Cup final.

So, the bottom line is that Di María scored 3 goals in finals, and it’s normal that he didn’t score in the other 3 finals.

In contrast, Messi contributed 4 goals in finals and played in two more finals than Di María. If you want to say that Di María’s presence in finals is exceptional, that’s actually true, but the idea that he’s the “number one” has never been true, because in five tournaments, Messi was Argentina’s top goal contributor—not to mention that he was named World Cup MVP twice!
