Samuel Umtiti officially announces his retirement
He suffered a knee injury a few months before the 2018 World Cup.
They told him he’d need surgery and would be out for six months, but he’d be back in great shape.
He refused, saying he’d just undergo physical therapy to participate in the World Cup with his national team.
He participated, played, and won the World Cup, and then the injury began to worsen.
They told him again, “Let’s get the surgery so it doesn’t get worse and you’ll be back in six months.
” He still refused, saying he’d continue with physical therapy.
He continued to undergo physical therapy, play two matches, and then get injured again, undergoing physical therapy again.
His form plummeted, and Barcelona sent him out on loan to Italian club Lecce.
He then moved on a free transfer the season before last to French club Lille, where he made no notable achievements until his contract expired and he was without a club for the entirety of last season.
He announced his retirement at the age of 31!
